How to Properly Measure the Wind Speed of EC Fans in Chicken Coops
EC Fans
EC fans are variable-speed fans with built-in DC inverters, widely used in the livestock farming industry. Their key feature is stepless speed regulation, allowing high efficiency even at low speeds. Properly measuring the wind speed of EC fans in chicken coops is critical to ensuring effective ventilation. Below are specific methods and considerations for measuring wind speed:
Tools Required
Use a professional anemometer, which should be accurate, sensitive, and easy to operate.
Measurement Locations
Air Inlet Speed:
Place the anemometer horizontally at the center of the fan inlet when the fan is running. Measure the average speed over 1 minute. Take measurements at 10 points (front/back, left/right of the coop) and calculate the average.
Curtain Inlet Speed:
During summer longitudinal ventilation or transitional ventilation in spring/autumn, measure at the center of the open curtain inlet using the same method as for air inlet speed.
Longitudinal Air Speed:
Measure at 1.1–1.3 meters above the floor. Distribute 9 points evenly across the coop (front/middle/back, left/middle/right). Measure each point for 1 minute, then average all 9 points to determine the overall longitudinal air speed. This is a key indicator of ventilation effectiveness.
Cooling Pad Air Speed:
Measure the airspeed after passing through the cooling pad. Place the anemometer parallel to the pad, approximately 50 mm from its inner surface. Take multiple readings across both sides of the pad and average them.
Instrument Calibration:
Ensure the anemometer is calibrated before use to guarantee accuracy.
Timing:
Measure only after the fan has stabilized post-startup.
Environment:
Avoid disturbances such as flock movement or other equipment operation during measurements.
Data Recording:
Document details like measurement location, wind speed values, and time for analysis.
Regular Checks:
Periodically measure wind speed and adjust ventilation equipment based on results to maintain optimal conditions.
Different ventilation modes and areas require varying wind speeds:
Longitudinal Ventilation: 2–3 m/s for egg-laying coops.
Curtain Inlet Speed: ~2 m/s to ensure cooling pad effectiveness.
Side Ventilation Windows: ≥4–4.5 m/s.
Cooling Pad Speed: ≥1.8 m/s.
Fan Outlet Speed: ≥6 m/s.
By following these methods and standards, you can accurately measure wind speed in chicken coops, adjust ventilation systems accordingly, and ensure a healthy environment for poultry growth.
